Mäori have fought for the survival of te reo Mäori, in response to colonisation, because it is the life-blood of their culture. In 1987 it became an official language of Aotearoa/New Zealand; however, the quest to keep te reo a living language has at times been an arduous one. This chapter will look at the highs and lows of that challenge, discussing the difficulties inherent in a society that banned te reo from the education system for over 70 years; an education system that also disadvantaged Mäori students in other ways. The Päkehä education system focuses on age-specific learning, regardless of ability or readiness; a concept that is alien to the Mäori style of learning. Since the early 1980s Mäori have responded to this challenge with the establishment of their own system of teaching and learning. This chapter will briefly outline those initiatives demonstrating that education is an ongoing life experience that involves the entire whänau, hapü and iwi. These initiatives have contributed to the revitalisation of the Mäori language.
